RAC to review TSB’s Lac-Mégantic report
The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) is studying the Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s (TSB) report into the July 6, 2013 derailment in Lac-Mégantic, Que. The TSB released its report at a press conference this morning.
“We are fortunate in Canada to have strong institutions like the TSB to undertake this kind of post-accident investigation,” said RAC President and CEO, Michael Bourque. “The railway industry has an excellent and productive relationship with the TSB. We will learn from this report, and will work to ensure that we fulfill our commitment to safety.”
Since the tragic accident in Lac-Mégantic, the Canadian railway industry has introduced new initiatives to improve safety, transparency and emergency preparedness, while accelerating existing efforts. The industry has worked with the federal government to develop new rail safety rules and regulations, and has redoubled its first-responder training efforts. The RAC now also requires companies to make a commitment to safety culture, as a condition of membership in the association.
