RAC releases Rail Trends 2017
The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) today released the 2017 edition of Rail Trends, the association’s annual report summarizing the performance of Canada’s railway industry. Rail Trends 2017 contains a rolling 10-year review of statistics, reflecting multiple aspects of railway performance: from safety and fuel efficiency, to infrastructure investment and productivity.
“The highlight of this report is that 2016 was the safest year on record for Canada’s railways,” said RAC Acting President Gerald Gauthier. “Nothing is more important to Canada’s railways than safety, and the industry’s performance in this area speaks to this commitment.”
Highlights (2016):
- The accident rate among Canada’s freight railways was a record-low 2.02 accidents per billion gross ton-miles
- RAC’s freight railway members originated a record-high 4.8 million carloads
- Canada’s freight railways reported their best fuel efficiency on record
- Canada’s passenger railways moved a record-high 84.2 million people
- Railways invested $1.5 billion into their Canadian networks
- RAC members paid a record-high $1.7 billion in taxes
