Tshiuetin Rail Transportation, Inc. is a Railway Association of Canada member that is making history with every trip. Created by the First Nations of Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam, Matimekush-Lac John and Kawawachikamach, Tshiuetin is the first railway in Canada to be entirely Indigenous-owned. Tshiuetin offers critical rail services between Sept-Îles, Québec, Emeril Junction, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Schefferville, Québec. James Berubé is the Director of Operations for Tshiuetin.

While BCIT is one of three providers of post-secondary railway training in Canada, the school is the only one with its own certified, operational railway. It is also the first to divide the Railway Association of Canada (RAC)’s rail curriculum into three distinct courses for part-time study.

Brandon-based Cando Rail Services got its start as a rail salvage company and found success in making all that was old new again. In 1978, Cando’s co-founder, Gord Peters, quit an oilfield job when he and partner Rick Hammond found a neat niche: ripping old rail track out of abandoned lines across rural Canada, and repurposing it in environmentally responsible ways.
