Winter Readiness: CN and CPKC’s 2024-2025 Winter Plans

Posted on

Winter in Canada can be beautiful, but its unpredictable conditions can pose significant challenges to the entire supply chain, impacting the movement of goods and people across the country. Yet, Canada’s railways are ready for the cold. Their resilience and determination to keep the economy moving remain steadfast.

It’s already winter in some parts of Canada and, CN and CPKC are implementing comprehensive strategies to tackle the challenges of operating through Canada’s harshest months. Leveraging technological innovation, operational improvements, and strategic investments, both Class 1 railways are committed to delivering efficient service and meeting the needs of Canadians from coast to coast.

Since 1881, CPKC has met the challenges of Canada’s winters head-on. In its seventh annual winter report, CPKC outlines refined regional plans, clear grain movement targets, and a commitment to industry-leading safety. With strategic investments and innovative winter contingency planning, CPKC is prepared to move up to 525,000 metric tonnes of grain weekly during the coldest months, ensuring strong performance and rapid responses across its network.

As detailed in its latest Winter Plan, CN is leveraging AI-driven track inspections, real-time supply chain tools, and initiatives like pre-charged grain trains to combat extreme cold. With $3.5 billion in planned investments and new rolling stock, CN is enhancing network capacity and resilience.

Both CN and CPKC continue to raise the bar in winter readiness, prioritizing safety, efficiency, and supply chain reliability. For more details, check out the full winter plans here: CPKC, CN.
